Five phrases you may hear during a World Cup Match
Every four years billions of people around the world tune in to watch soccer and millions of Americans begin to pay attention to the beautiful game for the first time in four years or ever. While we know soccer isn’t the most popular sport in Texas, here are 5 common phrases you may hear when watching the FIFA 2026 World Cup.
Pitch
Not the kind you see in baseball! It’s not the field, turf or yard, they’re playing on a pitch down there.
Match
This one is simple but they’re not soccer games, mate. They’re soccer matches.
Equalizer
An equalizer is a goal that ties up the score of a match. For example if a team is down one goal but then scores to make it 1 to 1, that is an equalizer. Great if it’s your team, demoralizing if it’s the opponents. Even more dramatic if it’s scored in the final minute of play.
Clean sheet
People will say a goalie or goalkeeper had a “clean sheet” in a game where they managed to hold the opposing team to 0 goals. Similar to a shutout in baseball.
Worldie
This term comes from England to describe a top-tier caliber goal.
